The little bunt that could!

Updated Monday June 3, 2019 by Kanata Baseball Association.

It was a wet and rainy delayed start as the Cubs headed out to Merrickville for a double-header with the Surge. The Surge beat the Cubs in their last matchup so the Cubs were looking for redemption. As the game got started the rain stopped and the players were able to hit the field.

The Cubs were leading off the inning with Owen L who hit a fly ball to left field but the fielder tracked over to make the grab. Jacob hit a hard shot up th emiddle to get himself aboard. Abraham drew a walk and just like that the Cubs had 2 runners on early. Coleman stepped up for his first at bat of the day and hit a single towards 3rd and used his fast wheels to beat it out at first. Aidan drew a walk scoring the cubs first run. After a groundout Scot followed suit and the Cubs got their second run of the day. That is all they would get but took the early 2-0 lead. AB was the man on the mound this day. It took a few batters for AB to find that right arm slot as he walked the first three batters. A big hit to the fence came next clearing the bases on a double. AB was not allowing anymore as he absolutely shutdown the surge from there with three strikeouts in a row. AB came off the field and said "Hey Coach, I found my slot I'm good now." and boy was he! Cubs trail 3-2 after the first.

The second inning was a shorter one for the Cubs as they were sent down in order after 2 ground balls and strikeout. AB was keeping his team in this game as he followed suit getting 2 strikeouts and a grounder to Connor at 2nd who flipped it over to Cameron at first.

In the top of the 3rd inning the Cubs got going after a lead off strikeout as they had back to back singles by AB and Coleman who had a big at-bat battle against the Surge pitcher fouling off many balls until hitting a high strike to right field which scored AB. Back to back walks had the bases loaded for Kyle. Scot came up and hit a ground ball fielders choice scoring another run. A walk by Connor brought up Goldie who hit a 2 run double scoring a total of 4 on the inning for the cubs. AB was looking to hold that lead for the Cubs and he did just that getting a fly ball to left field that Kyle tracked beautifully for the first out. Back to back strikeouts are what followed sending the Surge down in order. Cubs lead 6-3.

Top of 4th was not as lucrative as the 3rd as the Cubs themselves were set down with back to back outs to start. AB hit a single then a ground ball by Coleman that he beat out had the defence throw and get AB at 3rd for the 3rd out. AB was heading back to the mound with not too many pitches remaining in his count. AB managed to get a pop fly which he managed himself for the first out. Unfortunately AB hit the next batter which would come around to score on a couple of singles by the Surge sixth and seventh batters. AB would get a ground ball to second to Conor who threw to Cameron at 1st for the 2nd out. AB had one last batter as he tried to end the inning but unfortunately he was walked. Mason came on to pitch to th enext batter who popped out to cameron at 1st. Cubs still have the lead 6-4.

The 5th inning was upon us and Mason was able to get on with a lead off walk. After a couple of stolen bases Mason came home to score on a dropped 3rd strike throw to first ti give the cubs the only run they could muster this inning. Mason went to the mound to help his own cause in the bottom half. A foul ball popped to Scot at 3rd was the first out. A soft ground ball to AB who now took over at 2nd base and a quick flip to Cameron gave the Cubs 2 quick outs. A walk and to singles had the a run scored for the Surge. The next batter hit a ground ball up the middle the was fired wildly off line and ended up in right field. Cameron quickly got to the ball and fired a strike as the runner tried to make it to 3rd on the overthrow and Scot caught a great throw by Cameron and made the tag for the first out. Cubs hold Surge to 3 runs. Game is tied.

In the 6th inning the Cubs were unable to muster anything on the bats with the exception of a seeing eye single hit by Owen L. Mason was back on the mound doing what he does and that is battle. Mason had a dribbler hit and as he came off the mound to grab the ball anded up on his belly, a backhanded pitch to Cameron had the first out. After a single a hard grounder to Scot at 3rd fired to AB for the out at 2nd for the fielders choice. After a walk given up, mason was able to get a fly ball hit to Hunter in left field for the 3rd out. Cubs & Surge tied at 7.

In the 7th inning the Cubs wanted to put up a lead with their 3-4-5 batters in the lineup at the plate. Unfortunately they were unable to make it happen as they were put down in order after some hard hits but the Surge players were able to make the outs. Mason was back on the mound trying to hold on to the tie for the cubs in the last inning. After a lead off walk the next batter laid down a beautiful bunt in front of Owen L. As the runner rounded 2nd for 3rd Owen picked up the ball and fired it to 1st just outside of the reach of Cameron at 1st and unfortunately the runner was able to come around to score.

Final Score: Kanata Cubs 7  Seaway Surge  8
